The Exploratory Study on Knowledge, Practices and Attitude of Medical Laboratory Practitioners Towards COVID-19 In Murang’a County Public Health Facilities

Abstract

Introduction: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by SARS-COV2 and is the causative agent of a potentially lethal disease which is of great concern for global public health. Kenya is at its height with a concerted effort to control the spread of the virus and a successful response to public health in terms of contact detection, rapid laboratory diagnosis, quarantine and symptomatic care. The study determined the knowledge, practices and attitude of medical laboratory practitioners (MLPs) in Murang’a County public health facilities towards COVID-19.

Methods: The study used cross-sectional exploratory study design which was carried out to 171 MLPs in Murang’a County public health facilities in the month of April 2020. It involved medical laboratory scientists, medical laboratory technologists and medical laboratory technicians. Structured questionnaires were administered and analyzed.

Results: Response of 50.9 % (87/171) MLPs was achieved.

Conclusion: There is need for more continuous education and or training for MLPs and research towards COVID-19
